You switch on the table lamp and your eyes get burnt; you open the window and perceive new smells that don’t let you breathe. You turn on the radio and the music booms in your head, so much that you fear it will explode. And you don’t have a hangover. It’s worse. It’s been called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and has come to stay. Your body has said ‘enough’, has been broken and starts rejecting everything that they told you was essential for your happiness. Your life has taken an unexpected turn, your mind changes, your future vanishes, you don’t have physical nor mental energy. The disease forces you to live your life behind a mask and have been in isolation from the outside world.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is not strange, nor a minority. It affects to the 5% of the population. It’s a chronic disease, not psychological, which causes symptoms as a response to a minimal exposure to usual and unnecessary chemical products like bleach, air fresheners, perfumes, etc. We live locked in our houses but it’s not necessary to go out to have a crisis. Your neighbour’s cloths airing outside suffocate you, make you feel sick until you loose consciousness, thanks to the wonderful toxic softeners.
The World Health Organization (WHO) don’t recognize MCS as a disease yet, in spite of having in their possession innumerable studies that prove its existence and the European Parliament includes it inside the growing number of diseases related to environmental factors. The reason is the pressure that the chemical and pharmaceutical industry exerts for not recognize it, because MCS is caused by the chemical products that we use to consume. The economical interests in front of our health. In countries which this problem is recognized, like Germany, medical assistance and financial aids towards it are provided, and in some other countries it is being considered at the moment.

And what’s the situation in Spain? We don’t exist to our paternal government. On top of the drama of suffering MCS, they abandon us, without medical assistance and without any right to a disability benefit when we can’t work. They leave us naked and unprotected, like second class citizens, because we’re the evidence that the current model of society has failed, although nobody wants to see it or to take measures to sort it out.

They too steal any hopes we might have of feeling better. Pharmacists finance research only when they can obtain any profit. As a result of this, minority diseases don’t get research, not even MCS, which affect to the 5% of the population. The chemical and pharmaceutical industry knows that we get sick because we’re intoxicated and the key is not any medicine that will make them rich. The key is to change the model of this society, decreasing the big quantity of chemical products to which we’re exposed each day. Obviously, this can’t be known and they try to deny that MCS exists, because their economical interests would be at stake.

The chemical industry, supported by the government, doesn’t have the right to subjugate the population to the involuntary exposure to chemical substances, whose effects are often unknown. When we develop MCS, we must throw away perfumes, softeners, plastics, etc., to be naked again. We born again, but it’s a new life that we don’t choose. We know by the researches that have been done that MCS has genetic components, so not anybody could develop it, although this doesn’t save you to accumulate toxics until you have a cancer or any other disease related to environmental factors.

Those who suffer MCS want the disease to be recognized; we want to have the same rights as the other chronically ill people; we want society to know the risk they are under; we want the government to protect its citizens and prevent them from getting sick at no cost for them.

We don’t want anybody feeling naked again as a result of suffering MCS.

Link to magazine Delirio Nº 3. this is really Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or MCS - with a disability in the capacity of working, of having a social life and of autonomy, which varies from mild to very severe digree depending on the stage of the disease;

Since the MCS is recognized by the U.S. Federal Law for the Disabled American with Disabilities Act, the federal agencies - The news comes from a recent letter by the Department of Health of the Austrian Government.

MCS in the ICD-10 in Germany
In a letter dated September 4, 2008 the DIMDI, the Cooperation Partner for Germany of the WHO, wrote that MCS – Multiple Chemical Sensitivity was classified in the register ICD-10 GM which is valid in Germany:

T78.4…Allergy, not otherwise specified;
Chapter 19 (Injuries, Intoxication and certain other outcomes), Article T66-T78 (Other and unspecified injuries caused by external causes)

MCS in Austria recognized as physical disease
With a letter dated June 24, 2009 regarding “Chemical Sensitivity / MCS – Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (T78.4)”, the Department of Health of the Austrian Government declares that:

In response to Your letter dated 4/14/2009 to the Minister of Health Mr. Stoerger, we inform you that the WHO ICD-10 Code modified for Germany from DIMDI is used in Austria as well.

Also in Austria MCS is not a psychological disease

It should be emphasized that the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) declared explicitly that there is not any allocation of MCS in Chapter 5 (Mental and behavioural disorders) of the ICD-10-GM. Thus, the debate about MCS as mental illness is at an end.

In Germany doctors who document the diagnosis and the hospital administrations work under the Social Security Code V, which states that the diagnoses have to be made according to the systematic list of ICD-10-GM. Thus, the ICD-10 classification is legally binding.

The Department of Health of the Austrian Government refers in the letter that MCS - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is recognized in Austria as a physical disease, because also there it will have the code T78.4 in the ICD-10.

Author: Silvia K. Morover, Giancarlo used to repeat that his MCS started after an experimental hormonal treatment he received (without notice) just in the same hospital a few years ago.

Giancarlo’s lawyer brought a complaint about these facts to the Prosecutor's Office, but the practice was archived.

“It’s not by chance that he ended his life in the office of his doctor; it’s an extreme cry for help that will weigh on the conscience of the doctors of Bologna, of the Superior Council for Health -– Francesca Romana Orlando, Vice President of A.M.I.C.A. comments – but this fact is also a warning to our Members of Parliament to approve an immediate law for MCS (we have five projects waiting to be discussed[2]) and to prevent the conflict of interest in the medical area.”

“For us it is inconceivable that the management of MCS is given to experts of occupational medicine whose hospital/university received funds from an insurance that is facing dozens of trials vs MCS patients”, she concludes.

Donatella Stocchi remembers that “He was an active and intelligent man, full of life and instead was forced to stay in his car to run away from the fumes of chimneys of neighbours, from pesticides spraying, from paint fumes, etc.”

For people with MCS chemical avoidance in the home environment is comparable to a life-saving drug and, in fact, in the United States and Canada, the MCS is covered in the guidelines of urban planning and environmental laws and there are public houses for MCS.

Last September, the Superior Council of Health presented a position paper according which MCS cannot be recognized as a rare disease since it affects 2-10% of the population and it can not be even recognized as a real “illness” because there aren’t diagnostic tests.

“Actually, many illnesses are recognized even if there is not a specific diagnostic test, for example migrain and Fibromyalgia – the Vice President of A.M.I.C.A. adds – and all over the world the diagnosis of MCS is based on the 1999 International Consensus Criteria which are the conclusion of a 10-year long study.”

“The Chemical Sensitivity is a condition recognized, but it becomes a problem when it comes to multiple chemicals together – Miss Orlando adds– today from Japan to USA, from Germany to Denmark, the diagnosis of MCS is based on 5 criteria and the individual can obtain a legal recognition of disability on the base of his/her own chronic illnesses”.

“We suspected that the MCS was not going to be recognized in Italy when we read, 2 years ago, the position paper draft of the inter-regional working group on MCS (of which the doctors of Bologna were members) –Silvia Bigeschi, Vice President of A.M.I.C.A. claims – because it quoted so many studies by scientists with conflict of interests who consider MCS a “psychosomatic disorder”; so we wrote immediately to the Second Chamber of the Superior Council of Health and we sent a large volume of studies with the pray to consider the new evidences about the neurological and metabolic anomalies in MCS, but this was ineffective. Nonetheless, MCS is considered a physical disability not only in the U.S. and in Germany, so Italy should not be left behind”.[3]

[1] The German Government Department for Social is the main department for disability, The Ministerium für Arbeit und Soziales. There are guidelines which are used by doctors, courts, authorities,… when it comes to a disability.

In our disability guidelines MCS is a physical disease. It is registered in the part for movement disorders, because we can’t go everywhere, etc. There was one sentence in this guideline which was disturbing and used by opposition to refuse our cases and say we are psychosomatic cases. It said MCS is a somatoform disorder.

One of my people at CSN wrote to the department and asked that this nasty sentence is removed from the guidelines. Now MCS is a physical disease nothing else. We have also the ICD-10 which says MCS is a physical disease. With these two tools nobody can discriminate us anymore."

Source: http://www.thecanaryreport.org/2008/12/25/germany-strikes-psychosomatic-cause-from-multiple-chemical-sensitivity-guidelines/

Original source in german: http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/2008/12/24/die-psychiatrisierung-von-mcs-kranken-stellt-in-deutschland-den-tatbestand-der-diskriminierung-koerperlich-behinderter-dar/

MCS, a secret affair

Unlike other countries, where position papers of governamental agencies on health issues are given a period of public comment, in Italy things go very differently.

In 2004 the National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS) held a one-day conference on MCS, during which some doctors, like Dr Roberto Lucchini and prof. Lorenzo Alessio from the University of Brescia, reported their own experience with MCS diagnosis.

Dr Ottaviano Tapparo, dentist from Munich (Germany), talked about his experience of treatment with amalgam safe-protocol removal in MCS patients.

In 2004-2005 the Council of 4 regions - Tuscany, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzo- recognized MCS and stated the opening of health centers for the diagnosis and treatment of MCS, but also social support. The recognition was a consequence of a petition that gathered about 25,000 subscriptions.

MCS sufferes though that their problems were having a solution, but the hope was soon lost when it come out that in the Regional Commissions there were psychologists and doctors of occupational medicine. Why?

Immediately after the recognition of MCS by the 4 regions, in fact, the SIMLII, a professional organization of occupational medicine, published a position paper about MCS. The main concept of it was that MCS doesn't exist and if MCS exists it's a psychiatric obsession of patients against chemicals. Moreover, the paper also suggested that doctors who make diagnosis of MCS are illuding the sufferers and making the National Health System and Insurances lost (irrationally) money.

Soon afterwords, the doctors of the regional commissions refused to make diagnosis and asked for more research to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità or ISS (the National Institute of Health), that created a commission. And time passed....

The inter-regional commission took more than one year to study about 1,000 articles from peer-reviewed journals. There were no news about the progressions of such commission until in the summer of 2007, at a court in Florence, the lawyer of the Region Tuscany presented a position paper of the inter-regional commission stating that MCS doesn't exist and people with such sensitivities can be treated sympomatically (that is to say with drugs or psychotherapy).

Most interestingly, that position paper shouldn't have been open to the public because it had not been licenced by the Superior Council of Health (Consiglio Superiore di Sanità, CSS, the Superior Council of Health is the the Consultive arm of the ministry of Health). Any position paper about health issues, in fact, must pass the evaluation of such Council.

That document was presented as official but it was only the opinion of the subscribers and not of the ministry of Health. So the MCS patient who had opened the controversy vs the Region Tuscany to have the right to be treated abroad in specialized centers, lost her battle.

The document of the inter-regional commission was somehow shocking because suggested a questionnaire with questions about the family income, the ratial identity, the state of marriage or divorce and even about any mortgages!

One more year had to pass before the final judgment of the CSS. This came on the 25 september 2008: MCS is not a real condition because there is not a single diagnostic test.

So even if the italian organization of MCS people wrote to the CSS twice to ask for a better evaluation of other studies not considered by the inter-regional report, the CSS preferred to deny the illness.

No MCS, no treatments

7 dicembre 2008 - An article published on La Nuova Ferrara, daily newspaper of the city of Ferrara, describes the situation of MCS in Italy now.

The Superior Council of Health, the scientific arm of the ministry of Health, has just published a position paper about MCS, claiming that “it doesn’t seem as a real illness and there are no evidences in the scientific literature”.

Moreover, a 43-year old lady from Ferrara with severe MCS has just lost a legal controversy vs the ASL (the agengy of health assistance of the punlich health services) and the local administration of the Regione Emilia Romagna for the reimboursment of therapies.

At the first grade the judge decided she was right and made the Asl pay to her 15.000 euros, that she had spent for IV of vitamines, gluthation and minerals from a german doctor who went to her house (she can not travel, not even enter a hospital).

Now the joudge of the Court of Appeal of Ferrara, Roberto Vignatti, decides that she must give back that sum. According to the judge Vignatti there aren’t scientific proves of the efficacy of the therapy, even though the family doctor of the lady testified that she was much better after the treatment.

The judge believed to the doctors of the center of Bologna for MCS at the hospital Sant’Orsola who claim to be able to treat any MCS patient, but how? The lady from Ferrara denunced to the newspaper that the assistance given by the ASL is a nurse that comes to take samples for blood test and a cardiological consultation once a year.
